What it does
An attempt at composure performed by someone whose attention is entirely occupied by the result that has not arrived.
Use it when
- A decision is due at an unspecified time.
- You are pretending not to refresh a status page.
- Anticipation must be concealed in polite company.
For example
- The package has been ‘out for delivery’ since 6:04 a.m.
- You submit the audition tape and suddenly every notification is personal.
- The oven timer has ninety seconds left and you stand directly in front of it.
