  • You must report an unpleasant fact without dramatizing it.
  • Every available option carries a different problem.
  • A hopeful question has an apologetically negative answer.

For example

  1. “The repair is possible, but it costs more than the appliance.”
  2. The only direct train leaves before the wedding or after it.
  3. Your friend asks whether the photos from karaoke are flattering.
